SOL REPUBLIC surf team photographer Ryan Miller gives us an inside look into the last swell of the year on Hawaii's North Shore.
"Surfers look forward to events throughout the year for different reasons, but everyone looks forward to winter in Hawaii. The end of the year means big waves coupled with high energy contests, forcing everyone to step up and commit to some waves of consequence. Newest team rider Mitch Coleborn came just one spot short of qualifying for the 2014 WCT, but I’m sure we'll be seeing him at most of the WCT events this year. Julian Wilson stepped up when his number was called at Pipe and got a few epic waves. Keanu Asing was everywhere this year on the North Shore. Oliver Kurtz flew out for the last Pipe swell. He made the most of everything he could get ahold of and scored a few amazing Pipe waves in the process."
November was a big month for SOLdier visits at SOL REPUBLIC's San Francisco office. SOLdiers came from Canada, Florida and the Bay Area to meet the team and enjoy our beautiful city.
Here's who stopped by:
Carla – SOLdier 007 came to visit all the way from Winnipeg, Canada. Carla has been with us almost from the beginning and is always welcomed with open arms. She checked out some of SF's most popular spots, took amazing pics and even represented SOL REPUBLIC at the Dreamforce conference.
Michael & Deanna – came from Miami to tour the city with Carla. We first met them 2 years ago when they helped run the SOLdier shuttle at Ultra Music Festival. It was great hosting them in the office and we hope to see them again in March for the next Ultra.
Michael M. – we also met Michael at Ultra Music Festival. He was attempting to introduce Kevin Lee to SOL REPUBLIC’s product, without realizing that Kevin is our CEO! Michael’s Birthday wish was to visit SOL REPUBLIC HQ. Luckily, his mom made it happen. We spent an afternoon chatting together and hooked him up with Aoki tickets.
Pasindu – came up from Sunnyvale to meet the team and join all of the SOLdiers for lunch at our local food trucks. A few weeks back, Pasindu won the SOLdier Commercial challenge. Check out his submission here:
Christian & Siddharth - our honorary Bay Area SOLdiers came to hang out at Steve Aoki's SF show and meet Carla. Christian is a big fan of Carla's and got his “we will not be silenced” t-shirt signed by SOLdier 007 herself.

50 years ago Alcatraz housed America's most dangerous criminals, this weekend it held some of the world's best street basketball players. 64 players from 19 countries descended upon historic Alcatraz for The Red Bull King Of The Rock finals. Players battled not only their opponents in these fierce one-on-one battles, but also the famously difficult Alcatraz weather. Cold ocean winds whipped through the air, forcing both spectators and the competitors to drape themselves in cold weather gear.
In a place that necessitates toughness to survive, it was fitting that the winner was nicknamed "The Beast." Tarron Williams, a 36 year old from from Inglewood, CA, shut out Sergio de la Fuente of Spain 6-0 to take home the trophy. Williams performance, both skillful and gritty, impressed everyone including guest host Blake Griffin.
