Dub unchained music. It re-defined what a unit of music was, both in origin and in length. Before dub, we considered a recorded song to be the endpoint of a piece of music, and now, it was the start of composition. Before dub, we considered the end of a song to be the end of a song, and not merely a transition for the DJ. Before dub, we were stuck making music with the same old building blocks. Dub enabled us to look at everything as a building block.

The history and world of Dub, compliments of Matt M.

Nightclubs are popular all around the globe; however, it is very rare for a weekly nightclub event to be known around the world. The Gallery was started at Turnmills--a London nightclub--in April 1995, and it has become one of the most well-known weekly music events in the world. Turnmills closed its doors in 2008, which led to The Gallery undergoing a successful transition to Ministry of Sound--one of the most popular nightclubs in the world.

April 2013 marked The Gallery's 18th year of existence.

Dub is the "creative" of the music world. It's an object, a process, and a genre. From the internet I have learned you can take a dub, dub that to another dub, and then mix the doubled dub to make some dub. Are you following? Let's break it down.

A crash course is in order. You have two sides to The Rise: augmenting acoustic sounds through electronic means and creating sounds with no traditional acoustic element a.k.a. synthetic sound, made via “synthesizers.” Basically all of that history can be distilled to one focal object: the telephone.

Yes, the progression of EDM as a musical genre is extremely closely tied to the evolution of the electronic musical instrument. Granted, but I think we need to draw some lines.

I start my quest of learning about the history of EDM where the repository of modern data, Wikipeida, tells me to: Donna Summer. The page makes a decently big deal of the track “I Feel Love.” Upon some further study, evidently a lot of people have made a big deal of the track, including, famously, Brain Eno’s decree to David Bowie that “I Feel Love” would change the face of club music for the next fifteen years.

Cosmic Gate’s latest album, Wake Your Mind, has been wildly successful since its release in October 2011. Their shows have been appropriately branded “Wake Your Mind,” and trance fans automatically think of Cosmic Gate when the words “wake your mind” are uttered.

And so here I am fellow EDM neophytes. Openly admitting I know nothing, looking to learn, humbly throwing myself at the feet of the EDM gods. Come take a sonic journey through time with me as I try and educate myself about where musical fuel of our generation comes from. It’ll be like Reading Rainbow with more beats.
